Sustainability
Climate change is a global crisis and we have to adapt to a more sustainable way of living in order to help fight it. As a small business, we try to be as responsible as we can. We’ve outlined below how.
Made-to-Order
There was a time when having clothes made for you lay at the heart of the fashion industry. Clothes were crafted with care and with longevity in mind, items to be cherished and passed on to the next generation. At Cahaya, we like to think we’re old souls and so we decided to bring back the made-to-order slow fashion. This means your garment will be made specially for you, without carrying extra stock that we don't need and moving away from a fast fashion mentality. With our own team, we can make your order in two weeks. The slow fashion movement has inspired many of us to adopt a more mindful approach for our wardrobe.
Ethical Labor Practice
We design, pleat, and manufacture in the UK, working with a small factory to ensure a safe, healthy, and fair working environment for our team and partners. Our pleat factory and manufacturer are also only 20mins by car from each other – making it easy for us for factory visits, production, meetings and quality control. We do everything locally and do not fly our fabric or garments everywhere to reduce our cost of production. We choose to care a bit more for our carbon footprint instead of cutting corners to bring our production cost down. Why? Because we believe sustainability is the future.
Recycled material
Most of our garment are pleated on 100% recycled polyester. We use REPREVE® recycled polyester that is made of post-consumer recycled plastic bottles. Our recycled polyester is OEKO-TEX® certified. Since the launch of REPREVE®, it has recycled more than 12 billion plastic bottles and aims to recycle 30 billion plastic bottles by 2022. It curbs discards, thereby prolonging landfill life and reducing toxic emissions from incinerators. It also helps to promote new recycling streams for polyester clothing that is no longer wearable. It offsets using new petroleum, emitting fewer greenhouse gases and conserving water and energy in the process.
Wrinkle Resistant & Easy to Maintain
Most of our pleated garments are wrinkle-free, making them easy to maintain – no ironing needed even if you take it straight out of the suitcase. How do you maintain the garment? Just hand wash them or put them into the washing machine and minimum cold wash will do! Unless it is pleated on natural fabric then you will need to dry clean them.
